Classification, etiology, and accurate diagnosing of Female Sexual Disorders [FSD] – biological, psychosexual and contextual factors

Abstract
Female sexuality is a multifaceted phenomena. Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a multidimensional problem combining biological, psychological and interpersonal elements of multiple aetiology. Types of FSD include: sexual arousal disorder, orgasmic disorders, pain disorder (dyspareunia) and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). Up to 27% of women aged 40-80 years in Europe experience lack of sexual interest, 29% complain of HSDD, 22% of arousal disorder, 19% of orgasmic disorder, and 14% of sexual pain disorder.Objective: To summarize the main characteristics of female sexuality, and present a comprehensive view of the key factors in sexual health, and diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders. The most updated classification is presented, with a focus on predisposing factors contributing to female sexual dysfunction, precipitating factors contributing to female sexual disorder, and maintaining factors contributing to female sexual disorder. The degree of reported distress may have implications for the woman’s motivation for therapy and for prognosis.Key words: female sexual disorders, classification, etiology, diagnosis, physician-patient relationship
