Clay Intercalation Compound: Chromium Removal Study

Abstract

The present work investigates the influence of intercalated clay compounds of montmorillonite and bentonite on adsorption of total chromium in aqueous medium and comparison of the adsorption capacities of both. The present study investigates the applicability of bentonite and montmorillonite clay mineral intercalated compounds for the removal of total chromium ions from the aqueous solutions in single batch experiments. The experiments were conducted under different conditions of pH, initial concentration of metal ions, dose of clay and interaction time. The FTIR spectrum of bentonite and montmorillonite clay was used to identify functional groups present on clay that could be responsible for uptake of chromium metal ion species. SEM was used to study the changes in morphology of zirconium modified bentonite and montmorillonite clay mineral. Adsorption study was carried out in batch method which shows that adsorption increased with pH till precipitation of insoluble hydroxides became dominant. ZrO-Mont gave an adsorption capacity of 87.8 % for chromium at pH 6, interaction time of 15 min. compared to that of ZrO-Bent clay compound. The results of the present investigation show that clay minerals intercalated with zirconium oxychloride are effective adsorbents for the removal of chromium metal from aqueous solutions
