Clinical and histopathological correlation of soft tissue tumors - A study of 150 cases

Abstract

Background: Soft tissue tumors [STT] can be defined as mesenchymal proliferations that occur in the extraskeletal, nonepithelial tissue of the body, excluding the viscera, covering of the brain and lymphoreticular system. They are rare and constitute <1% of all cancers. They are classified by the line of differentiation, according to the adult tissue they resemble. Within the various categories, soft tissue tumors are divided into benign, intermediate and malignant forms[sarcomas]. Method: The histopathological specimens received in histopathology lab. Information and investigations were recorded from the requisition form submitted along with the specimen. Gross examination of specimen was carried, findings were recorded and specimens were subjected to routine histopathological rocessing. Sections were stained by H and E stain and then studied under light microscopy. Result: Out of 150 cases of soft tissue tumors, 135 cases (90%) were of benign, 12 cases (8%) were of malignant and 3 cases (2%) were of intermediate category. The painless, slow growing mass is the most common presenting symptom. Most soft tissue tumors presents in 3rd and 4th decade of life. The male to female ratio of STTs is 1:1.1. Head and neck is the most common site for STTs. Benign STTs outnumbered the malignant STTs with benign to malignant ratio of 11.25:1. Lipoma and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma are the most common benign and most common malignant soft tissue tumor respectively. Most sarcomas are of grade 2 type. Conclusion: The benign STT outnumber the malignant STT with benign to malignant ratio being 11.25:1. The histopathological evaluation is still the "gold standard" for the proper diagnosis of soft tissue tumors. IHC markers were very useful in supporting he diagnosis of soft tissue sarcomas, in the cases of diagnostic dilemma.
