Decreasing trends and prevalence of transfusion transmitted infections among blood donors: A study from north Andhra

Abstract

Background: Transfusion Transmitted Infections (TTIs), particularly through the viruses lead to the major health problems and challenges faced by the transfusion services. In order to provide safe and adequate quantity of blood and blood components, Government. Of India made pretransfusion screening and testing mandatory in the National Blood Policy (2002). Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the trends and seroprevalence of TTI’s among blood donors in North Andhra Pradesh. Material and Methods: A retrospective study of donor’s record covering the period between 2013 to 2018 is carried out at Blood Bank, GIMSR Hospital Visakhapatnam. All samples were screened for HIV, HBV, HCV, by ELISA method Rapid plasma regain method for Syphilis and rapid card test for Malaria parasite Results: Prevalence of TTI in total donors is 1.42%. Prevalence of Hep B (0.89%) was highest followed by HCV (0.25%), HIV (0.21%) and Syphilis (0.06%). There is a decreasing trend in TTIs from 1.65% in 2013 to1.26% in 2018 Conclusion: Implementation of strict donor selection criteria and use of sensitive screening tests has lead to decreasing trends of TTIs.
