Spectrum of benign breast lesions at BKL Walawalkar rural medical college and hospital - A tertiary care centre in Konkan Maharashtra, India

Abstract

Non neoplastic and neoplastic lesions of breast form an important group of diseases in women of all ages ranging from late adolescence to post menopausal age group. There was no known published data covering the subject in konkan. The present study is a retrospective study carried out in the department of histopathology of BKL alawalkar Hospital and Rural Medical college, a tertiary care centre, Sawarde, Maharashtra. A total of 1832 patients underwent histopathological examination during the period January 2012 to December 2013, of which 696 were malignant lesions. Total 151 breast biopsies were studied during this two year period between January 2012 and December 2013. Of these 104 were invasive ductal carcinomas, 2 cases were duct carcinoma in situ, 3 cases were that of phyllodes tumor. The remaining 42 cases were that of benign breast lesions, of which 38 were fibroadenomas, 2 cases wereof ductal epithelial hyperplasia, 1 case of mammary duct ectasia and 1 case of papilloma. The present study focuses on benign breast lesions reported at this centre.
