Clinical characteristics of allergic rhinitis in children. Cordoba, Argentina

Journal Title: Ciencia e Investigación Médica Estudiantil Latinoamericana - Year 2006, Vol 11, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a public health global problem due to its high prevalence, the existence of comorbid diseases and the impairment of the quality of life. The goal is to assess the allergic rhinitis characteristics and its co-morbid associations. Materials and Methods: The study desing is prospective, transversal and observational. A group of children between 6 and 18 years of age was studied. In first appointment they all showed AR compatible symptoms (sneezing, nasal pruritus, serous secretion and obstruction). Protocol medical records, physical exams and several studies were made: blood eosinophils, eosinophils in nasal cytology, IgE, skin tests, paranasal sinuses and cavum x- ray films, audiometry, logoaudiometry, impedance audiometry. They were all evaluated by simple blind test. Statistical analysis cosisted in single entrance chi-squared test, double entrance chi-squared test and the test of Man-Whitney. The values of p<0.05 were considered to be significant. Results: 90% of patients presented hereditary antecedents of allergy. The AR symptomatology included: sneezing (98.6%), serous secretion (95.7%), nasal pruritus (84.3%) and obstruction (75.7%). The most significant finding in the physical examination was pale nasal mucosa (p<0.0001).Other findings were: Asthma (41%), Sinusitis (37%) and Secretory Otitis (17%). The nasal cytology overage value was 18.5% and IgE 421 IU/ml. There was positive association with cough. Skin tests revealed atopy (78.6%). AR and asthma were associated to blood eosinophils (p<0.03), skin tests (p<0.04). Paranasal sinuses x-rays showed pathology (37.2%) and cavum film rays showed pathology in 37.1%.Conclusions: A strong association between AR and the atopic etiology of the disease was demonstrated. AR and asthma are clearly correlated and there was high prevalence of sinusitis and secretory otitis. Pale nasal mucosa and cough are the signs most frequently associated to AR.
