Clinical evaluation of the effectiveness of using a collagen matrix (Mucograft® prototype) in gingival recession coverage – a pilot study

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2012, Vol 65, Issue 2

Abstract

Aim of the study. To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of the Mucograft® prototype collagen matrix in covering periodontal recessions in a 12-month follow-up period. Material and Methods. A total of 7 patients were treated in the study. They were aged from 18 to 45 tears and manifesting single or multiple Miller Class I or II recession defects. Nine recessions were covered in the anterior part of the upper and lower jaw. The following measurements were used in the clinical assessments: recession depth (RD), recession width (RW), the height of the keratinized tissue (HKT), the distance from the cemento-enamel junction to the muco-gingival junction (CEJ-MGJ), and the aesthetic index (according to the Bouchard classification). In addition, both average (ARC) and total (CRC) root coverage were estimated. The procedures were performed using a coronally repositioned split-thickness trapezoidal flap combined with a Mucograft® (Geistlich Pharma). Results. The average ARC% was 84.3% and the CRC% was 55.6% 6 months following the surgery. On the other hand, after 12 months ARC% amounted to 89.6% while CRC% remained unchanged. The mean RW and RD after six months decreased by 2.4mm whereas HKT increased by 60.7%. The mean “creeping attachment” value between 6 and 12 months was 0.3 mm. 12 months postoperatively the mean RD and RW further decreased. The mean RD was 0.3 mm and the mean RW was 0.7 mm. At that time, the mean height of the keratinized tissue also increased to 4mm. Conclusions. The Mucograft® prototype is an effective and highly predictable solution for periodontal recession coverage that significantly enhances the width of keratinized tissue. It ensures a better colour match with the surrounding tissues compared with surgical procedures using autogenous tissue.
