Clinical Presentation, Pattern Of Involvement And Management Of Osteochondroma In Kumaon Region Of Uttarakhand – A Single Centre Experience

Abstract

Background - Osteochondroma is a common benign lesion encountered in clinical practice with its varied presentation and concerns. These lesion synonymous with osteocartilagenous exostosis present as bony outgrowth in solitary or multiple form that are often problematic by its size, associated pressure symptoms or pathological changes within the lesion and demand appropriate management ranging from watchful neglect to the surgical intervention. Aim - We, hereby, aim to provide clinical study regarding osteochondromatoses to formulate a comprehensive data on their presence and treatment in a tertiary centre in Uttarakhand region. The study will be helpful for future work on similar area. Materials and Methods - Clinical and demographic profile of 11 cases has been described in detail. The data about exostoses (both solitary and multiple) with special reference to their pattern, presentation, site involved, demographic details of cases and final management within a defined period. Result - Preponderance to male sex, younger age (<20 years) and medial aspect of knee region (distal femur and proximal tibia) was noted with mass with occasional pain as chief leading cause for surgical excision. Other relavant co-morbidities and associated features are also noted. Conclusion – Our study is first one to describe details of osteochondroma in a small hilly kumaon region in Uttarakhand. More robust collection of data in future shall give further insights about comprehensive profile of the disorder.
