Open reduction and internal fixation for displaced diaphyseal fractures of the clavicle with anatomical Locking Compression Plate- A prospective study
Journal Title: International Journal of Orthopaedics Traumatology & Surgical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Mid-shaft clavicle fractures (MCFs) account for approximately 80% of all clavicle fractures and 30% of these fractures are sports-related injuries in young males. Plate fixation can ensure firm anatomical reduction in severe displaced or comminuted fracture of the clavicle compared to conservative management. Objective: To assess the functional outcomes, the complications associated and the duration of union while treating displaced mid-shaft clavicular fractures by open reduction and internal fixation using locking compression plates. Materials and Methods: The prospective observational study was conducted at the Department of Orthopaedics, Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Ariyur, Puducherry from April 2011 to May 2016 by following up 200 individuals with displaced mid shaft clavicular fractures who underwent surgery for anatomical reduction of fracture using locking compression plates (LCP) from the time of admission till there was documented radiological evidence of bone union.. Results: Majority of the cases (82%) united by the end of 10 weeks and between 10 – 12 weeks (16%). There was one case which went for non-union. Average union time was 9.2 weeks. Functional outcome as assessed by Constant and Murley score was excellent for 128 (64%) and good for 72 (36%) patients. Conclusion: Management of displaced mid-shaft clavicular fractures with pre contoured locking compression plate showed good clinical outcomes in terms of bone union and functional rehabilitation.

Functional Outcome Of Spondylolisthesis Treated By Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion With Cage And Pedicular Screw Fixation – A Prospective Study
Background: Spondylolisthesis when symptomatic is treated by a variety of fusion techniques, the two commonest being posterior lumbar interbody fusion and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. The purpose of this stu...
Functional And Radiological Outcome Of Comminuted Intra-Articular Distal Radius Fractures Treated Withlow Profile Pre-Contoured 2.4 Mm Volar Locking Plates: A Retrospective Study
Background: Comminuted intra-articular fractures of the adult distal radius are increasing in incidence due to increasing high velocity trauma. Conventional closed reduction techniques with or without K –wire fixation of...

Functional Outcome Of Open Reduction And Internal Fixation Of Segmental (BIFOCAL) Forearm Fractures
Background- Segmental fractures of the forearm bones are rare and occasionally seen by trauma surgeons. These are often seen in high velocity injuries, and hence are accompanied by high degree of comminution and compound...
