Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Amputation is one of the most ancient of all surgical treatments, its history dating back as far as the 16th century. Objectives: To evaluate the clinical profile of patients requiring lower limb amputation. Material and Methods: This is a prospective study conducted at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune. Total of 50 patients in General Surgery OPD were taken as per inclusion and exclusion criteria Results: The commonest indication for amputation was uncontrolled infection / sepsis (48%) followed by gangrene (32%). The commonest type of amputation performed was Ray’s (60%) followed by below knee (22%). Fifty percent had an uneventful post-operative course. The commonest complication was suture site infection (22%). Conclusions: Developing awareness programs for early rehabilitation as well as early prosthetic fitting can prevent the amputee population from becoming a burden on the state.
