Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: The weight of abdominal contents is directed forward and creates downward away from the inguinal region into anterior wall of the upper abdomen. So inguinal canal is not subjected to significant gravitational stress. Upright posture in human cause gravitational stress to pass down to lower abdominal wall, which structurally is not designed for it nor has the evolution, suited it for its new role. Further, inguinal canal is directed downward and the weight of the intra abdominal contents pressing on its internal opening tends to dilate it and allow the loops of bowel to enter the canal. Methodology: This was a prospective study done in hospital attached to medical college and research institute with groin hernias and undergoing surgery for groin hernias. The sample size was 30 and non-probability purposive sampling technique was adopted Results: Our study shows that 70% were indirect, 30% were direct of which 63.33% were Right sides, and 36.66% were left side. Conclusion: In our study groin swelling was most common presentation followed by pain with swelling.
