Clinicopathological spectrum of female genital tract neoplasms - A rural tertiary care hospital study

Abstract
Background: On a worldwide basis, the most common gynecological neoplasm in women is cervical cancer, second only to breast cancer as the most common cancer of women. Present study focuses on neoplastic lesions in endometrium, cervix and ovary in rural tertiary care centre. It will also help to get the recent data on incidence of neoplastic lesions in rural area. Objective: To study clinicopathological aspects and histopatholgy of female genital tract (FGT) neoplasms. Materials and Methods: A descriptive study was carried out on 140 histopathological specimens of FGT and endometrial and cervical biopsies during the period of July'2017 to December'2017. Data including age, parity and clinical indication for operative procedure were collected for the study. The specimens were routinely processed and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (HandE) stain and examined microscopically. Vaginal and abdominal hysterectomies which were reported as non-neoplastic lesions were excluded from the study. Results: Total 470 cases of female genital tract lesions received in department of pathology; out of which 140(29.8%) were reported as neoplastic. Uterine corpus was the commonest site (66.4%) followed by cervix (17.4%) and ovary (16.4%). Leiomyoma and endometrial polyp were found to be most common in 4th decade. Conclusion: Neoplastic lesions in female genital tract are increasing over the period in the age group beyond 20 yrs.Benign lesions are common in reproductive age group while malignant lesions are common after 4th to 5th decade.Leiomyoma was the most common benign lesion while squamous cell carcinoma was the most common malignant lesion
