CODIFICATION OF THE POLISH MORPHOLOGICAL TERMINOLOGY IN „GRAMMAR OF THE POLISH LANGUAGE” BY O. KOPCZYŃSKI AND IN „DICTIONARY OF THE POLISH LANGUAGE” BY S. B. LINDE

Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 19

Abstract

The article deals with the formation of the Polish morphological terminology which is fixed in „Grammar of the Polish Language” by Onufry Kopczyński (1817) and „Dictionary of the Polish Language” by Samuel B. Linde (1807–1814). The main attention, firstly, is focused on the semantics of the studied terminology, the relations between the native Polish terms and foreign ones, secondly, it is focused on the phenomenon of synonymy, and its causes and productive ways of the formation of the terms of morphology. Five names of the notional, two names of the functional and a name of the separate (interjection) parts of speech and some terms to describe their grammatical categories were formed during the period of time under consideration (the beginning of the XIX century). But side by side with the Polish terms their Latin compliances are used actively, in particular, it is a characteristic feature of the vocabulary by S. B. Linde. The relations between the Polish and foreign terms suggest that the Latin terms are borrowed due to extralinguistic factors. A large number of synonyms (absolute and relative) indicates immatur uncodified nature of the terminology. Among the productive methods of the term formation prevails the analytical way (phrases), i.e. the domination of the descriptive terms indicates the primary stage of naming. In our opinion, these phenomena are a natural term formation process of the term system at the beginning of the XIX century.
