Coffee improvement by interspecific hybridization: A review
Journal Title: Journal of Agricultural and Crop Research - Year 2015, Vol 3, Issue 3
Abstract
Considerable studies on creation of the interspecific hybrids using induced tetraploid Coffea canephora P. and Coffea arabica L. varieties for improvement of resistance to Coffee Berry Disease (CBD) and Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR), growth habits, fertility, yield performance, genetic diversity, biochemical attributes and beverage quality as well as similar information on their backcrosses to Arabica coffee genotypes are reviewed in this paper. Whereas the F1 hybrids obtained by crossing induced tetraploid Robusta and Arabica coffee exhibited low fertility, backcrossing the hybrids to C. arabica parents restored the fertility to near normal levels. The yields and beverage quality of backcrosses improved to the levels of the best parents and in some cases they were even better. Of major significance was the resistance to CBD and CLR that the tetraploid Robusta was able to impart into the backcross progenies. These progenies were therefore potential substitutes for the susceptible Arabica coffee varieties in addition to taking the place of Robusta which has inferior beverage quality.

Effects of sprinkler irrigation on physical properties of soil and on the yields of green gram
Field trials were conducted in the arid and semi-arid of the North West Kenya to assess the impact of sprinkler nozzle size on physical soil properties and subsequently on crop yield. Three different sprinkler sizes were...
Pathogenicity of entomopathogenic Entomophthora grylli on grasshoppers Diabolocatantops axillaris and Zonocerus variegatus causing leaf damage of shea tree seedlings
The grasshoppers Diabolocatantops axillaris and Zonocerus variegatus were found feeding on the leaves of shea tree seedlings which caused damage that appears as rough patches on the surface. The objectives of this study...
