Journal Title: Mintage journal of pharmaceutical and medical sciences - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: due to the significant increase in the dementia and Alzheimer’s diseasesrate in recent years, public health has been facing inmany countries of the world, one of the major problemscaused by this disease. Because of this, natural productsarise, herbal, to assist in the treatment of dementia due totheir safer effects.Among these, stands out the extractobtained from dried fruits ofAverrhoa Carambola (AC),which has been studied and used as a natural supplementfor dementia. Objective: to investigate the AC administration as acoadjuvant factor in the treatment of dementia regardingto its effectiveness, way of action, recommended dailyamount, as a way offood and nutritional security for the population. Methodology: The present study was designed to standardise and to evaluate the Cognitive enhancement potential of methanolic extract of Averrhoa Carambola Fruits (MEAC). The MEAC was administered at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg. The Cognitive enhancement potential was evaluated using different models like elevated plus maze in ratsusing Sodium nitrite (95mg/kg s.c) to induce cognitive dysfunction. The passive avoidance test was carried out in ratsusing diazepam (1mg/kg i.p) to induce amnesia. The Hebb-William maze was carried out in rat’sscopolamine (1mg/kg i.p) was used as amnesic agent. Piracetam (200 mg/kg) was used as a standard nootropic drug in all the three models. Results: The results of the present study showed significant increase in Cognitive function, decrease in Cholinesterase activity, decrease in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and increase in Glutathione (GSH) of MEAC was evaluated by biochemical estimation of rat brain homogenate preparation.
