COGNITIVE METAPHOR AS AN EPISTEMOLOGICAL PHENOMENON: BASIC AND TRANSMITTING METAPHORS

Abstract

The article analyzes the current system of scientific views on the study of cognitive metaphor as an epistemological phenomenon. On the material of East Slavonic script monuments and other cultural phenomena of Kievan Rus, the basic concepts of metaphor are explained: basic and translating metaphors. The integral perception of mental schemes that guide people in their lives is provided by basic metaphors as fundamental universal assumptions of a mental nature. The significance of basic metaphors is determined by their system-forming function of forming concrete conceptual pictures of the world and is explained by the possibility of the existence of a common world’s universal picture. The philosophical and logical interpretation of metaphor suggests that the number of metaphors is limited, meaning by limitation the accountability of metaphorical models. Such models are the initial intuitive assumptions that arise a priori and are fixed in discursive (logical) thinking as a way of receiving, processing and storing information. The distinctive feature of the basic metaphor - its cultural universality and deep cognitive syncretism – implies a very general character of the mental matrix applicable to the large-scale field of knowledge. Such a metaphor is the carrier of a global idea, the conceptual projection of which is carried out at different levels by translating metaphors. The change of metaphorical preferences in different cultural epochs is due to the nature of the basic metaphors functioning.
