COLD GAS DYNAMIC SPRAYING OF METALLIC COATINGS ON COMPOSITE MA-TERIALS AND PLASTICS: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Problem. The analysis of the current state of the problem in the field of cold gas-dynamic spraying (CS) of metallic coatings on composite materials (CM) and plastics has been conducted in order to gain experience for further research in this field and better understanding of the mechanism of forming metallic coatings on nonmetallic substrates as well as to study the properties of such coatings. At pre-sent, composite materials based on ultrathin carbon, glass, organic and other types of fibers in combina-tion with polymer binding materials are widely used in various branches of engineering. Along with ex-cellent properties of CM and plastics, there are also disadvantages such as low erosion resistance, elec-trical conductivity and low operating temperatures. To eliminate the aforementioned shortcomings, met-al coatings are used, which makes it possible to pro-vide specified surface properties and expand the scope of application of non-metallic materials. Methodology. Nowadays only a few methods are used to metallize plastics and CM with a polymer matrix, namely physical and chemical vapor deposi-tion, galvanization, electroforming and gas-thermal spraying. But these methods have disadvantages, such as high cost of equipment and metallization process, limitation of sample size and metallization area, low adhesion strength of coatings, environ-mental pollution and personnel health hazards, etc. Results. The use of the cold spraying method makes it possible to overcome the shortcomings of CM and to obtain new opportunities Originality. The in-creasing demand for low-energy, environmentally safe, efficient and low-cost coating processes en-courages the search for and the development of new alternative methods, one of which is cold spraying. Practical significance. The analysis of the current situation in the field of formation of metallic coat-ings on nonmetallic surfaces by cold gas-dynamic spraying has shown that this technology is promis-ing for the formation of coatings on nonmetals and it can be successfully used to provide electrical con-ductivity and other properties of CM and plastics.
