COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF FRICTION EFFECTS OF THIN CERAMIC COATINGS IN ROTARY, TRANSLATION, AND RECIPROCATING MOTION
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 234, Issue 6
Abstract
In the present study, the tribological properties in rotary, translational, and reciprocating motion in ball-on-flat sliding contact is discussed. The coating of tungsten nitride with the thickness of 0,5 μm deposited onto ferritic steel was sliding against an alumina ball. The coefficient of friction and depth of wear groove were obtained. Analysis of the wear processes was investigated by the use of a light microscope (LM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The coating exhibited good adhesion to the substrate. The first cohesive cracks were observed at critical load LC1 = 8 N and adhesive failure at LC2 = 16 N. Microhardness of the coating/substrate system of 8GPa depended on the deformation of soft substrate. The highest wear resistance of the coating/substrate system was determined in reciprocating motion and the smallest in rotary motion. In the beginning stage of sliding, the friction coefficient of 0.12 was smaller in rotary and translational motion than in reciprocating motion and amounted 0.16.
