Comparative analysis of methods for monitoring the physiological state and vigilance of train driver

Abstract

One of reasons the violation of train safety is the decrease in level of vigilance and efficiency of train driver. The traditional method of checking vigilance by measuring the reaction time of driver to signals of sound or light warning does not allow objectively determining the level of its physiological state. In addition, regular periodic vigilance checks divert the train driver from the current work for train control. The purpose of investigation is the comparative analysis of possible methods for monitoring the physiological state and vigilance of train driver. Contact and con-tactless methods of monitoring have been considered. The method of encephalography allows to enough accurately determine the level of physiological activity of driver. The main disadvantages of this method are the relatively high cost of devices, the complexity of analyzing obtained data, and also the inability to obtain correct encephalogram in case incorrect arrangement of sensors. The methods of monitoring the physiological state of a person using pulsometry, as well as using an accelerometer are quite simple. However, each of them alone cannot give a complete picture about the driver's condition and its efficiency. The main advantage of methods based on video surveillance is that they do not distract the driver and in no way interrupt the train control process. However, these methods do not allow obtaining complete information about the functional state of driver. Enough effective is the method of measuring electrodermal activity. The use this method in combination with others, for example with pulsometry or methods based on video surveillance has been proposed. The complex analysis of various diagnostic parameters will allow objectively determining the level of physiological state and efficiency of train driver.
