Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Biochemistry - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 3
Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to estimate of electrolyte levels in patient with diabetes mellitus and compare the result among the various levels of HbA1C and also to find out the correlation between electrolytes and HbA1C. Methods: This longitudinal study was conducted in a saveetha medical college hospital in Chennai for a period of 3 months. Blood samples were collected from 200 diabetic subjects. Samples were analysed for HbA1C, sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate levels. Results: A significant decrease in levels of electrolyte Na and Cl with various HbA1c levels and there is no statistical significant in potassium and bicarbonate was observed when compare among the various levels of HbA1c. Conclusion: It may be concluded from this study that hyperglycemia(uncontrolled DM) dysregulation of glucose homeostasis may lead to electrolyte imbalance.
