Comparing Pre-Operative Shaving Versus Trimming In Terms of Patients and Operators Satisfaction and Convenience, A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Pre-operative hair removal is a part of surgery nowadays. Different methods used are: razor shaving, electric trimming, and depilatory cream. This study was carried out to know the impact of hair removal method on patient and operator. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: Primary aim: To compare the shaving versus trimming of hair, in terms of patients and operator satisfaction and convenience. Secondary aim: To evaluate the shaving versus trimming of hair, in the form of; 1) Completeness of hair removal, 2) Degree and type of skin injuries. METHODS: Data was collected from the department of surgery at SSGH in the period from December 2014 to January 2016. The patients were randomized into two groups. Patient and operators were given questionnaire to evaluate their satisfaction and convenience. Wounds were examined for grade and type of skin injury and completeness of hair removal. RESULTS: Total 365 patients were studied. Trimming group: 184, Razor shaving group: 181. Operators were more convenient with trimmer and patients were more satisfied with trimming as skin injury was less in it. 79 out of 181 (43.64%) patients reported skin injury in shaving group, while it was in 1 patient in trimming group. Hair removal was incomplete in 17 patients (9.23%) in trimming group and it was in 6 patients (3.31%) in razor group. CONCLUSION: Trimming was considered superior by avoiding skin injury and convenience of operator while this was inferior in terms of completeness of hair removal which was better done with razor shaving.
