Comparing the Dimensions of Spatial Legibility with Wayfinding Strategies

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 12

Abstract

Lost in space where both urban and interior architecture is reminiscent of sheer helplessness and insecurity. Two components play a part in the process of obtaining spatial information: the appearances of the space and the appearances ofthe observer. The observer's perception and understanding of the characteristics of a space occurs as a result of spatial psychological processes that happen in the mind. At the same time, legibility is influenced by spatial characteristics. Legibility of space depends on two components 1. Spatial arrangement of the plan and its complexity in second dimension,2. Prominent landmarks in third dimension. The purpose of this paper is describing the navigation and wayfinding strategies and then its classification into four new approach based on spatial dimensions. Indeed, this article tries to outline and motivate the approaches and presents first results from comparing these strategies with degree of legibility of space in second and third dimensions.
