Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2016, Vol 7, Issue 1

Abstract

Intonation plays a function on changing of the meaning according to speaker’s intention and listener’s inference in the process of perception and interpretation of message. In this study, based on the Speech Acts Theory of Searle (1969), it is aimed to determination of the comparison of intonational patterns of some speech acts which convey variable semantical-pragmatical functions in Turkish and Russian and the discourse-phonologic differences cross languages. By reason of Russian and Turkish differ with their word-order, there seems tonal variations in sentence-initial and sentence-final positions, however it is observed that the focus items carry similar semantic and pragmatic references in both of the languages. The database of this phonological observation techniques used study composed of the verbal data containing mutual conversations of speakers that is adapted to their own languages for 25-30 aged matched speakers one of whom mother tongue is Russian and other ones is Turkish. Each speech act consisted of mutual conversation that differs by its discourse function. Their phonologic analysis were done in Praat 5.2 Program for 4 speech acts (8x2) in total 16 mutual conversations. The role of intonation in discourse function of Turkish and Russian is explained for the data analyzed on the basis of intonational variations including tone, focus and pitch accents. Also, it is reached similarities and dissimilarities by their focusing and intonation structures via this way cross languages.
