Journal Title: Profesinės Studijos: Teorija ir Praktika - Year 2010, Vol 6, Issue 6
Abstract
Scientific terminology is the system of names of things and phenomena which help scientists to talk among them selves. Medical terminology is the science about words related to human body systems, anatomy stuctures, processes and procedures.Because of accuracy and constancy the Latin language has been international scientific language for hundreds of years. Due to long-lasting closeness of international scientific links between countries, the medical science of any country have formed specific medical terms. Structural names of body parts and organs must be Latin, but every country has a right to form native language equivalents to the Latin ones. The first Lithuanian folk names are found in K. Sirv ydas work “Dictionarum trium linguarum” (Three-language Dictionary published about 1620). J. Basanavicius collected and published about 270 medical terms in the Russian and Lithuanian languages and selected their Lati n equivalents. He was an initiator of the Lithuanian medical terminology. Latin greatly influenced the English language which belongs to the Indoeuropean parent language. Differently from the French language, English has a lot of loan words. Approximately a half of words of Standard English are of Latin origin. Though one-word terms are often considered to be better and more comfortable for usage, but in scientific, technical and other specific areas, in order to name more complicated concepts, compound terms are used, which make up a major part of terms in most areas. The medical terminology is mainly comprised of compound terms. The group of two-word compound terms is only a small group of word combinations used in scientific language.
