Complex of finds from a destroyed early medieval burial in the north of Tatarstan

Journal Title: Поволжская Археология - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 14

Abstract

The author offers for discussion a complex of female decoration and elements of costume from a grave destroyed in 2009 by some quarry activities at Stary Uzyum village (Atnya dist., the Republic of Tatarstan). Typological identification of the items and observation of their manufacturing technology allows attributing this Stary Uzyum complex to a circle of late- and post-Azelino sites of the Volga-Vyatka interfluvial area in the 6th – 7th centuries AD. It is full set of typically late Azelino decoration and elements of costume (arch rattling pendant, epaulette-shaped buckle, ‘sawed’ plates, bases of plates with a triangle pendant), as well as the composition of some other, wider spread items on different cultural sites of the Volga and Cis-Ural region (circular clasp, triangle pendants on 8-shaped chains, lamellate plates, syulgam) included in the complex, align this Stary Uzyum burial with late Azelino complexes from the Akhmylovo Jr. and Shor-Unzha burial grounds and Bezvodny hoard found in the western territories of the Volga-Vyatka region, and – to a lesser extent – with some separate burials of the Konets and stray finds from the Tat-Boyary burial grounds. The complex can be preliminarily dated within the 6th century AD.
