Composition of the Balta City Council and production and trade industry developing in the second part of XIX – early of XX century

Abstract

In this article we investigate data on the composition of Balta City Council and production and trade industry developing in the second part of XIX – early of XX century. We display the city rating information in this period and its region trading importance; give the names of mayors, executives, traders, and the deputies of the City Duma of this period in terms of election; clarify the role of urban fairs in the economic life of the city during their heyday and the decline, the list of goods. The article review also the turnover of Baltic Troitske fair in 1899, 1908 and 1909; present data on the trade fairs turnover of 1843, 1846, 1852, 1857 and 1890. We have pointed that the items of trade fairs were wheat, cattle, lard, wool, leather; display the figures of city population increasing, its ethnic groups, the number of houses, streets, the list of trade institutions and enterprises, the sum of their productions, the names of the owners; show the amount of city income from the various city activities and expenditures in different years. In the article we present adetailed analysis of the proprietors’ names, the sum of annual production, the quantity of factories and workers in 1848, 1860, 1890, 1897, and 1911; give the statement about factories and plants of 1899, which shows industry, quantity of enterprises, amount of production and number of workers represented, and the income of the city in 1900 was given as example; the names of insurance company, their owners and city chemist shops. The status of the city is shown on the eve of the First world war. We point that in the beginning of nineteenth century Balta becomes one of the largest trade and craft centers of the Southern Ukraine. We give opinions of local residents that in the beginning of twentieth century local trade turnovers were considerably weak; city funds had chronically lack of money.
