Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 3

Abstract

This paper analyses the state of studies from various aspects of life and practices from the creative intelligentsia of Kyiv in the conditions of Nazi occupation, conducted by Ukrainian researchers in the years of Independence. It traces determining tendencies and features of the historiographical process, furthermore emphasizing on insufficiently explored issues and promising areas of future investigations. It is established that current research is in a stage of accumulating certain foundations of knowledge by Ukrainian historians, which is elaborated by employing new methodological and conceptual approaches. Mostly, researchers are highlighting the activity of creative intelligentsia in works that are dedicated to the operation of cultural institutions in occupied Kyiv, the problem of seizing of cultural valuables, or the characteristics of Nazi informational and sociocultural policies. A range of biographical studies was conducted to allow an understanding of these problems through the lens of the fates of various intellectuals and cultural figures that worked and lived in the occupied city. The most fully explored and yet most controversial issue is the spread of Nazi collaboration among the creative intelligentsia. A promising direction for further scientific exploration is the studying of the lives and work of intellectuals in Kyiv in the light of everyday life: showing their perception of war and occupation as well as their relations to the occupational administration; investigating their living conditions, opportunities and ways of professional self-realization; and also determining their morale and psychological state and their means of coping.
