Composting: a new method for reduction of solid waste and wastewater

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

increasing solid waste and urban waste water is one of the major and important problems of urban management and one of the problems of municipal wastewater treatment is the problem of sludge disposal. So this research done for the better understanding the effect of cocomposting process of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge (SS) and to consider the factors of obtaining the research objectives. A pilot-scale active aeration bioreactor was studied for cocomposting of municipal solid waste (MSW) and wastewater bio solids (WB). The weight ratio of the MSW (dry solid basis) to WB was 3:1. Obtaining compost from municipal solid waste, in comparison with other methods of solid waste disposal, is cheaper and more economical, as in suburbs suitable fertilizers can be obtained with little investment for the development of urban green space or for sale. Co-composting manure can be acquired by combining these two, so it overcomes the problems of municipal solid waste and wastewater treatment and finally the produced fertilizer is used for agricultural, horticultural, etc. To remove heavy metals and enhance the C/N ratio, sawdust has been used.
