Conductivity of heat produced during the polymerization of materials for temporary restorations by the dentin layer

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 2

Abstract

Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to estimate the conductivity of temperature produced during the polymerization of a temporary prosthetic crown by the dentin layer.Materials and methods. The removed third molars, prepared in accordance with the generally adopted principles were used in the study. The temperature produced during polymerization was estimated with use of a thermal probe, placed centrally inside the pulp chamber and connected with a digital thermometer, and recorded at intervals of 1 s. The measurement was performed with an accuracy of 0.1°C. Four materials, Unifast Trad, Protemp II, Protemp 3 Garan, Provitemp-K, were evaluated.Results. The analysis of the results showed the temperature changes inside the pulp chamber during the polymerization of a temporary prosthetic crown.Conclusions. The dentin layer remaining after a tooth preparation for prosthetic restoration is quite a good insulator that reduces heat transfer to the pulp chamber, but does not completely limit the conduction. In case of some materials, the rise in temperature inside the pulp chamber is extensive and it poses a risk to the preservation of pulp vitality.
