Consequence of autonomic nervous system disturbances in symptomatology and pathogenesis of the seizures

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2013, Vol 26, Issue 10

Abstract

Patients who suffer from epilepsy are group of people with ten times higher risk of sudden unexpected death to compare with healthy people.Pathophysiological mechanisms related to this event are unknown. Disturbances of circulatory and autonomic systems are supposed to be responsible for SUDEP based on patients clinical observations and animal experimental data, where abnormalities of cardiac rhythm or signs confirming lungs edema were observed. Autonomic nervous system disturbances may be a symptoms of partial seizures or they can be an element which accompany seizures, especially generalised tonic, tonic-clonic ones and partial, which focus attached to temporal lobes structures, either. It is unknown whether antiepileptic drugs influence on the presence of circulatory or autonomic system disturbances or sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).Observation of circulatory system in patients with epilepsy enable establish role of autonomic nervous system and also predict risk of SUDEP in this population.Subsequent investigations are necessary to explain mechanism of SUDEP and influence of antiepileptic drugs on the frequency of SUDEP presence.
