Constipation – etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 1

Abstract

Constipation is an important health and social problem. It ccurs in approximately 30% of the population. The aim of this study was to discuss the etiopathogenesis, diagnostic methods and treatment of constipation. Constipation, depending on the cause, is divided into primary (idiopathic) or secondary caused by other factors. Idiopathic constipation can be divided into three major subtypes: associated with prolonged intestinal transit (slow transit constipation – STC), with normal transit time through the intestine (normal transit constipation – NTC) and related to pelvic floor dysfunction. The diagnosis of constipation involves the following additional tests: infusion of contrast of the large intestine, coloscopy, assessment of transit time through the large intestine by using markers, defecography, anorectal manometry, magnetic resonance imaging and biopsy of the rectal wall. Treatment of constipation begins with conservative treatment. Surgical treatment is used in the absence of effective conservative treatment in selected patients. The method of surgical treatment depends on the type of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract or pelvic floor.
