CONTENT ANALYSIS of the VIEWS of HISTORY DEPARTMENT STUDENTS on the IMPORTANCE of FAMILY HISTORY TEACHING

Abstract

Local history and oral history hold an important place in the history education. One of the basic issues in the field of oral history is family history. The academic field has been investigated on the families who have led the world and Turkish history. There are many studies on dynastic families in Turkish history. After from the nineteenth century, new history ideas put forward that history should be interested in not only kings, sultans, rich people but also the lives of ordinary people. People wondered history of states moreover they interested in the life of the workers, the peasants and the poor people in the past. Therefore, "the history from below" was called as ordinary peoplecentered history in the twenty and twenty- first century. Social history will gain more importance with oral and local history. It is obvious that family history will gain importance in the future. The aim of this study is to explore formation history class students’ opinion related to family history teaching. The study is based on qualitative methods. "What do you think about the place of the teaching family history in history education "? That question was asked to students and students were requested to write an essay about that question. These essays written by the students were evaluated based on content analysis. We tried to evaluate students’ opinion related to family history teaching. The study is designed on qualitative research basis and the data collected throughout the study was analyzed via content analysis technique in which the data needs to be conceptualized, arranged in a logical sense according to the determined concepts and then the themes. When the results of the study is evaluated, most of the students pointed out that family history is important because it creates identity and makes it easier to learn the general history.
