Content of essential oil and its composition in fruit originated from caraway (Carum carvi L.) collection

Abstract
In 2007–2009, the caraway collection consisted of 22 objects (18 populations from European botanical gardens — named according to localizations of gardens, cultivar: Kończewicki and three strains from our own breeding program) were evaluated. The content of carvone, limonene, dihydrocarvone, dihydrocarveol, carveol, α-thujone, α-pinene and β-pinene in essential oil was estimated with GC. The obtained results showed that the objects in caraway collection varied in terms of essential oil content and its composition. Mean content of essential oil ranged from 3.2 (Poznań) to 5.2% (Kończewicki). The content of carvone varied from 55.4 (Ulm) to 71.6% (strain 60/8), and limonene content from 25.0 (strain 60/8) to 40.3% (Ulm). The contents of carvone and limonene were inversely proportional to each other. Carvone and limonene mixture made 93.3–98.1% of all oil compositions. Carveol content varied from 0.06 (Zürich) to 0.25% (Göttingen), dihydrocarvone from 0.01 (Jena) to 0.11% (Reykjavik), dihydrocarveol from 0.01 (Kraków, strain 60/8) to 0.06% (Zurich), α-pinene from 0.01 (Prague, Poznań, Bayreuth) to 0.06% (Zürich), and there were traces of α-tujone and β-pinene content.
