Journal Title: Men Disability Society - Year 2013, Vol 2013, Issue 1

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of coping with difficult situations by students with visualimpairments in the context of their social competence. The results obtained reveal that universitystudents clearly prefer a task-oriented style in difficult situations, and are marked by a satisfactorylevel of social competence both in their general results and in individual aspects. Social competenceis an important resource in coping with difficult situations. The preference of the task-orientedstyle co-occurs with a higher level of social competence, just as the preference of the avoidancecoping style, especially the style based on the search for social contact. The dominance of theemotion-focused coping style is associated with lower effectiveness in social functioning.
