Detrimental effects of allowing children to watch television excessively and to use computers and tablets

Journal Title: Men Disability Society - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 20

Abstract

It is perhaps the first article in Poland that contains the findings of research on adverse effectsof watching television excessively by children and of using a computer or a tablet for too long. Itprovides approximate data on how much time children – including Polish children – spend sittingin front of a TV set or a computer. This data is alarming. Parents are convinced that children arelearning new information and developing intellectually at that time. The research conducted bythe author and scholars from France, Belgium and Germany shows that it is not true, as watchingtelevision and using a computer excessively result in serious disorders in children’s socio-emotionaldevelopment and reduce their intellectual abilities. The author also presents arguments indicating that watching television and using a computeror a tablet do not have a beneficial effect on the development of attention, do not improve eye-handcoordination, do not expand children’s vocabulary or communication skills, do not increase theirknowledge, etc. Moreover, when children watch moving pictures excessively – which dominate ontelevision and in computer games and programs – they are unable to receive information presentedin a static manner. That is why they are not interested in books and have difficulty meeting academicrequirements. The last part of the article provides suggestions for adults about what to doso that watching television and using a computer or a tablet are not harmful but promote children’sintellectual development.
