Creating an innovative culture. Empirical evidence

Journal Title: International Journal of Contemporary Management - Year 2011, Vol 10, Issue 1

Abstract

Innovation is at the moment one of the major sources of competitive advantage in enterprises. The stimulation and development of innovative activities requires, however, a favourable environment. Organisational determinants of innovativeness may be analysed from three different perspectives: an individual, a group or a system. Whereas the first two are key to the process of creating innovation, the latter is essential to its implementation. Organisational culture is an extremely important determinant referring to all the three categories. An overview of the literature on the subject reveals that in fact it frequently becomes the key success factor in organisational innovation. The paper describes the organisational culture of West Pomeranian enterprises as a factor which may significantly contribute to the development of the innovative activities those enterprises undertake. It also presents empirical evidence from an analysis of 118 business entities. Within the initial group one subgroup has been identified – leaders (excelling in various dimensions: market, economic, organisational, etc.). This category is used on the one hand as a reference for comparisons and contrasts of cultural determinants of innovativeness made for the remaining entities, and on the other hand – as a base for the identification of key innovation drivers and barriers. As a consequence, conclusions may be reached concerning the analysed enterprises’ potential to shape an organisational culture supporting innovation.
