CREDITABLE EVENTS IN THE HISTORY OF SPORTS MEDICINE IN POLAND. IT HAPPENED IN THE OLYMPIC YEAR 1928

Abstract
The events that took place eighty years ago, in the Olympic year 1928 proved to be a turning point in the development of the idea of providing medical care for athletes – following the precursory period, they initiated the pioneer period during the interwar era. The plan of medical counselling for athletes was worked out, including the clinic equipment, program of training in physical education and sports for physicians; the instruction of medical evaluation for athletes was implemented. The efficient realization of this program was initiated on the turn of 1928 and 1929. Two research-oriented medical care units, dealing with physical education and sports were established at the Medical Department of the University of Warsaw. Their activity was encouraged by active participation of Polish representatives of the milieu of sportsmen and physicians in the establishment of the International Association of Sports Medicine [Association Internationale Medico Sportiva (AIMS)] in St. Morits in February 1928, and their participation in the first Congress of this organization in August 1928 in Amsterdam. The ideas developed at the pioneer stage, despite changes in the political system, affected the progress in sports medicine in Poland till the end of the 20th century.
