CRITICAL REMARKS ON SOIL CLASSIFICATION IN CONFORMITY WITH THE STANDARD PN-EN ISO 14688:2006

Abstract

The paper presents main errors, incoherencies and understatements noticed in soil classifi cation in conformity with the PNEN ISO 14688:2006. Three groups of defects have been observed in the PN-EN ISO 14688:2006: A – defects, imprecision, understatements noticed in the original ISO version; B – defects resulted from inaccurate translation; C – defects observed in the Polish Appendix. The main errors of A group have been as follows: incoherencies in defi nition of soil name according to macroscopic analysis and on the basis of grainsize distribution curve as well as incorrectness in classifi cation of states of cohesive soils. The impossibility of simple transfer from the soil name in conformity with the PN-86/B-02480 to the soil name in conformity with the PN-EN ISO 14688:2006 has been demonstrated. The adequate graphical and numerical examples have been included. In addition numerous minor defects have been discussed. The general assessment of the standard under reference has been presented.
