Journal Title: Мова - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 26

Abstract

Despite the fact of toponymic lexicon inclusion in the body of general dictionaries of the English language, it should be noted that this is a special lexis. However, the selection of the given lexicon should be based on certain criteria, which we can judge only by toponyms which are present in the bodies of dictionaries. The given problem has no full coverage either in lexicography or in the preface of explanatory dictionary where the problem mentioned is not disclosed, which shows the relevance of this study. The purpose is to analyze the information which the toponymic definitions contain and to identify the data on which the selection of toponymic lexicon is based. The objects of the study are 9 general explanatory dictionaries of the English language. The subject of this study is the informative data of toponymic definitions. The results of the study suggest that the toponymic lexis is selected on the basis of an enormous information potential, which is concentrated in the semantics of a given category of proper names, which is an important factor in the formation of a user’s broad outlook and erudition. However, it is not known, grounding on what kind of information about the nominated object the names are chosen. After analyzing the definitions of place names, chosen by consecutive selection, it became clear that the whole range of information data, consisting in toponymic definitions, is quite wide. However, it is not possible at present to determine what kind of data serve as the main factors for choosing place names. The practical significance of the work consists in a detailed analysis of the information which the toponymic definitions contain in a general explanatory dictionary of the English language with a possibility of its further application in practical lexicography.
