Cytotoxic Triterpenoids from Strawberry Calyx Discarded as Agro-Industrial Waste

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 9

Abstract

Phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of the strawberry calyx of the plant growing in Egypt, collected as an agro-industrial waste, led to the isolation of five compounds; salicylic acid (1), ursolic acid (2), corosolic acid (3), tormentic acid (4), and β-sitosterol glucoside (daucosterol) (5). The structures of compounds 1-5 were established on the basis of extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic techniques. This is the first report for the isolation of compounds (1, 3, 4 and 5) from strawberry calyx. The cytotoxic activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated using MTT assay against five human tumor cell lines; hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2), human skin carcinoma (HFB4), colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116), epidermoid carcinoma (larynx) (Hep2) and mammary gland carcinoma (MCF7). Compared to a well-known cytotoxic agent, 5-florouracil, compounds (2) and (3) showed higher cytotoxic activity against all the tested cell lines.
