Cytotoxicity of dental materials used in prosthodontics. A literature review

Abstract
The majority of dental materials release a lot of different chemical substances to the oral cavity. The aim of this study is to review the cytotoxic influence of dental materials used in prosthodontics for the cellular line in in vitro studies. Online databases and relevant Polish literature were searched. The search resulted in 32 papers describing the influence of acrylic and acetal resins, alloys, dental ceramics, hard and soft denture lining materials, composite resins, adhesive systems, compomers, glass-ionomer cements, phosphate cements, polycarboxylate cements, zinc oxide-eugenol cements, materials based on calcium hydroxide, retractions agents and dental impression materials. All dental materials showed different level of cytotoxity, which should be taken into consideration prior to the selection of the material for the clinical application.
