DECLARED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND FUNCTIONAL ABILITY VERSUS REAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OF WOMEN LIVING IN THE NURSING HOME

Abstract

Physical activity is a necessary component of healthy functioning in elderly people. Physical exercises are essential to maintain a proper level of physical capability which may ensure elderly people independence in performing their daily activities. The aim of the study was to assess the reported physical activity and functional ability of elderly females and to measure actual physical activity levels using.22 women aged over 60, living in the nursing home participated in the study. The information about the physical capability and functional ability self-reported by the respondents was collected using a suitable questionnaire. Actual physical activity was measured using Armband SenseWear Pro2 device by Body Media.68% of the respondents assessed their level of physical activity as lower than moderate. Almost 60% of respondents reported no problems walking around the house, while a half of the group was able to go out without assistance.Besides, most of the participants were able to execute easy household chores without difficulties, while was not executing any tough works. The respondents reporting higher physical activity, no problems with mobility and no difficulty in doing household chores were characterized by higher values of total energy expenditure, active energy expenditure, means of MET, physical active duration, number of steps, and by lower lying down duration.The reported physical activity and functional ability corresponded with the results obtained from physical activity measurements, conducted using Armband SenseWear Pro2 device.
