DEFINITION OF THE ALFVÉN MODE IN INHOMOGENEOUS MAGNETIC FIELD
Journal Title: Solar-Terrestrial Physics - Year 2023, Vol 9, Issue 1
Abstract
The article is methodological and defines the concept of the linear Alfvén mode. There are two definitions — electrodynamic and hydrodynamic. In the former, the Alfvén mode is considered a wave with a potential transverse electric field. In the latter, waves are more often identified with the Alfvén mode, plasma motion in which is purely vortex. While these definitions are equivalent for homogeneous plasma, they are incompatible if the field line curvature is taken into account: if the transverse electric field is purely potential, the plasma speed has not only a vortex component, but also a potential one, and vice versa. The electrodynamic and hydrodynamic definitions are equivalent only if the wave electric field completely lacks a component along the binormal to the external magnetic field. However, such waves do not exist in nature.

EARTHQUAKES AND GEOMAGNETIC DISTURBANCES
The article addresses the problem of the connection of earthquakes with geomagnetic phenomena. We have carried out an experimental study using a method based, firstly, on the separation of periods of geomagnetic activity...
AMPLITUDE VARIATIONS OF THE REFLECTED SIGNAL DURING VERTICAL SOUNDING OF THE IONOSPHERE AT MIDDLE LATITUDES
In this paper, we discuss the main types of quasiperiodic variations in amplitudes of a reflected signal during vertical sounding of the ionosphere at middle latitudes. The initial experimental data is vertical sounding...
SCIENTIFIC GOALS OF OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS OF THE NATIONAL HELIOGEOPHYSICAL COMPLEX
Studies of the upper atmosphere have to be performed using optical photometric and spectrometric means. Modern devices allow precise photometry of the glow of the night atmosphere — airglow — with high temporal spatial a...
OBSERVATIONS OF SMALL-SCALE ENERGETIC EVENTS IN THE SOLAR TRANSITION REGION: EXPLOSIVE EVENTS, UV BURSTS, AND NETWORK JETS
In this paper, we review observational aspects of three common small-scale energetic events in the solar transition region (TR), namely TR explosive events, ultraviolet bursts and jets. These events are defined in either...
OPTICAL OBSERVATIONS OF SMALL SPACECRAFT AND SPACE DEBRIS AT ISTP SB RAS SAYAN OBSERVATORY
Launch of several thousands of small spacecraft as part of satellite groups of various companies (OneWeb, SpaceX, etc.) is expected in the coming years. They will significantly increase the “population” in the low-orbit...
