DEFORMATIONS AND FRACTURE ANALYSIS OF COATING-SUBSTRATE SYSTEMS USING INDENTATION METHOD WITH DIFFERENT INDENTERS

Abstract

Load bearing capacity of coating-substrate systems can be found from indentation experiments using different indenter geometry by transforming the load-depth indentation diagram to stress-strain diagram. In article consideration about deformations and failure of coating-substrate system were presented using results of TiN, CrN and a-C:H coatings deposited on X10CrNi 18-8 steel substrates. Critical loads leading to plastic deformation of steel substrate and coating fracture have been evaluated. Determination of these parameters allow to make deformation and fracture map for tested system. Such a maps can be useful for optimization of coating material and thickness for selected applications.<br/><br/>
