Delineation of Possible Extent of Flooding in Creeks by HEC-GEORAS

Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

This research emphasizes the estimation of overbank flooding in creeks and delineation of the extent of flooding in GIS format. For the purpose, a very versatile tool HECGeoRAS has been utilized with the combination of HEC-RAS and Arc View-GIS. HEC-GeoRAS is an Arc View-GIS extension specifically designed to process geospatial data for use with the HEC-RAS. For systematic hydraulic analysis, a creek from the Case Study of Izmir (Turkey) has been taken into consideration. The available data of the considered creek has been first analyzed in Arc View-GIS. Different additions have been made by utilizing the related attributes of Arc ViewGIS and HEC GeoRAS. The modified data sets of creek have been imported in HEC-RAS. Two scenarios with different depth of cross-sections have been analyzed for steady flow conditions in HEC-RAS. The simulated results reveal that in both scenarios significant flooding starts from the mid of the creek extending towards downstream. Overall, the intensity of flooding is more in the second scenario. The simulated results of HEC-RAS have been exported to Arc View-GIS through the combination of HEC-GeoRAS. The profiles for water surface elevations and delineation of flooding have been generated in Arc View-GISfor both scenarios. The generated results are quite comparable to the simulated results of HEC-RAS. This study recommends the use of HEC-GeoRAS in combination with Arc View-GIS and HEC-RAS for the proper assessment and delineation of flood intensity in small rivers and streams in order to ensure their long-term flood plain management.
