Dengue & Chikungunya fever, re-emerging virus infections: Diagnosed by real time PCR
Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Dengue Virus (DENV) &Chikungunya Virus (CHIKV), are emerging viral infections, have become a serious health problem in recent years. Re-emeregence of the other arboviral heamorrhagic fever &overlapping signs and symptoms have made diagnosis and treatment difficult for Clinicians. DENV causes self-resolving Dengue Fever (DF) in the majority of cases, but severe dengue is a potentially deadly complication due to plasma leaking, fluid [3,4] accumulation, respiratory distress, severe bleeding, or organ impairment. The prognosis of CHKV infection is generally good, though some patients may develop chronic arthritis & neurological involvement. Objective: This study was conducted to know the prevalence of dengue, chickungunya and their co-infection, the clinical presentations and epidemiological trends of these infections. Method: Retrospective analysis of the samples received from various clinical departments for detection of viral RNA of dengue and Chikungunya virus by real time reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) was done. Result: Out of 832 suspected cases, 276(33.17%) were positive for dengue virus& out of 1371, 762(55.57%) were positive for Chikungunya virus, 4 cases were co-infected for Dengue and Chikungunya. Conclusion: Early diagnosis &Monitoring of DENV & CHIKV infection is an important component of disease management. Viral RNA detection by RT-PCR gives a positive confirmatory result in the acute phase (first 7 days) of the disease. RT-PCR is rapid, specific & sensitive method of choice for the early detection and confirmation of virus in clinical samples.
