Dental status and treatment needs of children with somatic disorders and mental handicap from Lodz

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 4

Abstract

Aim of the study: To assess the prevalence of caries among handicapped children residing in the Lodz region, and to compare their dental treatment needs with those of non-handicapped children. Material and methods: The epidemiological study was carried out according to recommendations of the World Health Organization. Teeth with carious lesions, filled or extracted due to dental caries were counted and recorded. The dental condition of 223 handicapped children at the age of 7, 12, and 18 years was examined. Results: The incidence of caries and its intensity was high in both groups. The results showed a lower score of caries intensity and slightly higher treatment index in the group of handicapped children. Caries index was higher in the group of 12- and 18-year-old handicapped children. Conclusion: The research revealed insufficient dental care in both groups of children. The incidence of caries in the group of handicapped children is slightly lower than among healthy children. Nevertheless, it is necessary to intensify efforts of dental practitioners in the area of caries prevention, and to introduce educational programmes into their daily dental practice.
