Journal Title: Mikologia Lekarska - Year 2006, Vol 13, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: Superficial fungal infectionsare very common in Poland. Periodic reviews of infections fungal species have significant epidemiological importance. Aim of the study: A study was conducted to determine the main agents of superficial mycoses among inhabitants of the Pomeranian province in the years 2003-2005. Material and methods: Data were collected over a 3-year period from mycologic investigations made in the Mycology Laboratory at the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology Medical University of Gdansk (Poland). A total of 4017 patients clinically suspected of skin and their appendages infections were mycological examined during the period between January 2003 and December2005. Results: In 1209 cases (30.1%) the mycosis was confirmed with positive mycologic exams. The fungi cultivated included dermatophytes (n=581, 48.1%), yeasts (n=547,45.2%), and nondermatophytefilamentous fungi (n=49,4.1%). Candida albicans (22.7%) was the most prevalent, followed by Candida spp. (21.4%), Trichophyton rubrum (21.9%), and T. mentagrophytes (17.2%). The most frequently observed superficial mycoses among inhabitants of the Pomeranian province were: toe nails onychomycosis (n=514, 42.5%), fingernails onychomycosis (n=315, 26.1%), tinea pedis (n=101,8.4%), and tinea cutis glabrae (n=93, 7.7%). Fungal infections dominated among towns people (86.5%) and in adults patients (89.6%). Conclusions: The toe nails onychomycosis was the most frequent dermatomycosis in the Pomeranian province. The main agents of superficial mycoses among inhabitants of the Pomeranian province in the years 2003-2005 were yeast-like fungi and moulds.
