DETERMINATION OF GLUCODE - 6 - PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE LEVEL AMONG SUDANESE PATIENTS ON HEMODIALYSIS

Journal Title: European Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 9

Abstract

Background: There is considerable evidence that patients on Hemodialysis are in continuous state of oxidative stress. Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) is a cytoplasmic enzyme that protects erythrocytes against oxidative substances. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between hemodialysis and G6PD level. Materials and Methods: This is a case-control study conducted in Khartoum, Sudan. The study included 45 Sudanese Patients with end stage renal failure on Hemodialysis, their G6PD levels and complete blood count were measured and compared with 55 age and sex matched normal subjects as control. G6PD level was determined by full automation (Mindary Bs 480). CBC was performed by an automated hematology cell counter (Sysmex KX-21). Results: The study included 45 patients, 34 (75%) were males and 11 (25%) were female, their mean age was 44 ±11 years. 96% (n=43) of the patients were anemic with hemoglobin level less than 11.5 gm/dl. 56% of the patients had low G6PD activity with a significant decrease in the mean of the G6PD level among patients, when compared with the controls (p 0.000). Conclusion: In conclusion, low G6PD level was found in patients on hemodialysis with a significant decrease in the mean of the G6PD level among patients than the controls. Low G6PD level was found in both sexes.
