DETERMINATION OF OPEN HOLE EQUIVALENT TO AFTER IMPACT DAMAGE BASED ON RESIDUAL STRENGTH TESTS

Abstract

Studies presented in this article are part of work conducted in order to develop a reference methodology for assessing the impact of damage to the durability and strength of structures made of advanced composite materials. This work was carried out under the project TEBUK ‘Development of the technology for testing the resistance to damage of aviation and space composite load bearing structures’, which is carried out in the Institute of Aviation. The paper presents comparisons of residual strength of carbon-epoxy rectangular plate 150×100×3.96 mm with damage after impact (9 J and 18 J) and holes of different diameters (6.3 mm; 10 mm; 20 mm and 30 mm). Tested samples were made of carbon-epoxy composite with reinforcement configuration identical to the layer system of TEBUK demonstrator. Samples after the impact test were subjected to ultrasonic inspection in order to determine the outline of delamination. The aim of the present study was to determine the hole diameter, which reduces the residual strength to the strength level of impacted plate. The collected results were insufficient to uniquely identify an equivalent diameter of the hole, which was caused by the lack of a clear relationship between the diameter of the delamination/hole and residual strength of the tested samples.<br/><br/>
